Top 5 Summertime Injuries [infographic]

The top 5 most common types of summertime injuries include bug bites, sunburns, dehydration, swimming injuries, and bicycle-related injuries. Although the summer can be a fun time for everyone, it can also be dangerous without the right precautions. The following are some details about each of these common types of injuries and ways to avoid them to stay safe throughout the season.

1. Bug Bites

Bugs of all types come out during the summer, some of which can bite or sting and potentially spread diseases. The biggest threats throughout the summer are ticks, fleas, and mosquitoes. Deer ticks can spread Lyme Disease, while mosquitoes can spread other diseases, including West Nile Virus. Additionally, bees, wasps, and hornets are often prevalent throughout the summer, which can be painful and even dangerous in swarms or if an individual is allergic to their sting.

To avoid most pests, individuals can use insect and bug repellants containing around 20 to 30% DEET, but avoid exceeding 30% to prevent potential health issues.

2. Sunburns

Sunburns can be anywhere from mild to serious. Unfortunately, tens of thousands of people are hospitalized every year for sunburns, making it necessary for people to do what they can to avoid severe burns. To help prevent sunburns, it’s best to apply sunscreen of around 30 SPF or higher.

3. Dehydration

Dehydration affects many people over the summer, particularly when it’s hot and humid. People often don’t realize they’re dehydrated, either. To avoid the effects of dehydration, it’s recommended to continue drinking water throughout the day when spending time outside and engaging in physical activity.

4. Swimming Injuries and Drowning

People often turn to the water to cool down on hot summer days. At the same time, water-related injuries and drownings increase throughout the season. In addition to drowning, spinal cord injuries often result from diving attempts. It’s advisable to practice caution around pools or open waters. Staying with a group of people and avoiding dangerous diving tricks or diving in shallow waters can help keep swimmers safe.

5. Bicycling Injuries

Wrist and arm fractures are some of the most common types of injuries involving bicycles, along with head injuries. When riding a bike, cyclists should stay in bike paths to avoid car accidents and always wear a properly fitted helmet.

Taking the right steps this summer can help prevent these and other injuries.
