Should You Steer Clear of Motorized Ride-on Toys this Christmas?

Should You Steer Clear of Motorized Ride-on Toys this Christmas?

A trendy holiday gift for young children, motorized ride-on toys carry the risk for accidents that may result in serious injuries or death. These battery-operated, smaller versions of popular vehicle models let kids move from one place to another by simply pressing a gas pedal or handle.

Motorized Ride-on Toys Put Young Children at Risk

Like motor vehicles driven by adults, children may get into wrecks when operating motorized ride-on vehicles, which could cause them to suffer serious injuries or death. According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, riding toys accounted for an estimated 69,400 injuries in 2017. Further, these types of toys were involved with 54% of the reported toy-related deaths for the year.

Causes of Ride-on Toy Vehicle Dangers

Several factors contribute to the potential risks associated with children using motorized ride-on toys. Just as may happen with adults and actual automobiles, children may lose control of motorized ride-on vehicles and could crash into stationary objects. In such cases, kids may come off the toys and suffer fractures, abrasions, head trauma, or other such injuries. Should they tip or roll, these vehicles could land on top of small children, potentially resulting in crushing injuries.

Adult-sized vehicles also pose a significant danger to children operating motorized ride-on toys. Low to the ground, such toys in use on streets, driveways, or other areas designated for motor vehicles may not be seen by drivers. Consequently, they may strike or run over children.

Safety Tips for Using Motorized Ride-on Toys

Taking certain precautions may help parents allow their children to experience the world of ride-on toys as safely as possible. While it may be tempting to buy that Barbie Jeep or miniature BMW, parents should check the age recommendation before purchasing ride-on toys. Further, they should consider their children’s development and coordination to help determine if the toy is age-appropriate for their little ones. Parents should familiarize themselves with the operation of the toys and take advantage of safety features, such as locking out the high speed. It is also a good idea for parents to help their kids learn about the toy parts and how different parts work before letting them play. In addition to giving instructions before allowing them to test out their new ride-on vehicles, parents should always supervise playtime with these toys.
